LOCAL BULLETIN - The 2012 Tom Keenan Award, won by the man who led the drive that brought Guild representation to the Jewish Forward's business employees, will highlight the Guild's semi-annual membership meeting on June 26. Also to be discussed are the Guild’s recent organizing of Kaplan English teachers, contract talks at The New York Times and Consumer Reports, the unprecedented broad salvo of discipline at Thomson Reuters and the plan to ship Standard & Poor’s work offshore.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Michael Dempsey of Consumers Union and Oscar Hernandez of El Diario La Prensa have been declared elected to a seat on the Executive Committee after no opposing petitions were filed for the vacant positions before the June 1 deadline. In addition, Anna Pierdiluca of Consumers Union was declared elected as Chairperson of the Representative Assembly (RA).

LOCAL BULLETIN - By a 2-1 margin, New York City-based teachers of English as a second language at the Washington Post Co.'s educational subsidiary, Kaplan Inc., voted for workplace representation by the Guild, becoming the company’s first U.S. employees to unionize. Kaplan management had run an intense anti-union campaign.

LOCAL BULLETIN: Nominations for the Tom Keenan Award are open until Friday, May 25 and the Representative Assembly (RA) has nominated several candidates to fill vacancies on both the Executive Committee and RA.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The Guild announces the opening of nominations through May 25 for its annual Keenan service award. Also the NLRB has scheduled an election for June 7 to enable more than 90 English teachers at Kaplan Inc. to decide whether they want the Guild to represent. And Emily Flitter of Thomson Reuters has been declared elected to a seat on the Executive Committee.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The New York Guild’s Representative Assembly (RA) has named Moira Herbst of Thomson Reuters as its candidate to replace Priscilla Sutton, who left the Executive Committee when her administrative group at Thomson Reuters was eliminated. Herbst was nominated without opposition at the February 21 RA Meeting.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The popular digital video training program the Guild offered in the spring of 2010 is coming back for a six-week engagement for Guild members in New York. From Dec. 13 through Jan. 22, the Guild will offer the course nine times at no charge for Guild members only. Space is limited, so don't hesitate to sign up if you're interested in aquiring a new skill to keep pace in these fast-moving times.

LOCAL BULLETIN - A small group of employees at The Forward Association, publisher of Jewish newspapers and digital media, recently voted unanimously to name the Newspaper Guild of New York as their bargaining agent.

LOCAL BULLETIN - A Guild drive to organize a business unit at The Forward Association was given a major boost recently when the National Labor Relations Board found that three out of four individuals the company claimed were not appropriate for union coverage were, in fact, eligible to vote in the upcoming election.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The Guild will hold its semi-annual meeting for members from all units on June 28 to present the 2011 Keenan Service Award, to update members on the state of the Guild and to offer a preview of next month's CWA convention. This year's Keenan Award goes to Time Inc. Unit Chair Jill Jaroff.
