NEW YORK – Unionized editorial workers at Law360 have had enough with the company’s nearly year-long delays on contract talks and will hold in-person and remote lunch-time rallies Wednesday.

NEW YORK – The Times Tech Guild – the largest union of tech workers with collective bargaining rights in the country – will walk out this afternoon in protest of the New York Times’ flagrant disregard for their rights as union members. Times management has continually attempted to coerce members to comply with its unlawful return-to-office policy.

October 10, 2023 — Members of the Reviewed Union, which represents workers at Gannett’s flagship consumer review site, will walk off the job on Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days event today in protest of management’s failure to schedule bargaining dates and revocation of overtime pay from hourly employees after the announcement of the union last year. The Reviewed Union is one of more than 50 Gannett bargaining units represented by The NewsGuild-CWA.

deal, including retroactive pay and remote work rights, to workers.

NEW YORK – The NewsGuild of New York released the following statement from President Susan DeCarava in response to the historic vote to elect Claude Cummings Jr. as the next President and Ameenah Salaam as the next Secretary-Treasurer of the Communications Workers of America, the parent union of The NewsGuild-CWA. Cummings will be the union’s first-ever Black President. Salaam is the first Black person to hold the Secretary-Treasurer post.

After a two-year fight for a first contract and a 13-day ULP strike – the longest digital media strike in history – members of Insider Union today announced that they have reached a tentative agreement with management, including settlement of a ULP related to management’s unilateral changing of workers’ health care coverage.

Gannett journalists today announced that they would be holding a wave of nationwide strikes starting on June 5, the day of Gannett’s annual shareholder meeting. Hundreds of union journalists in two dozen newsrooms from California to New York are expected to take part to demand that Gannett get serious about reinvesting in local news, in the largest collective action that Gannett employees have taken to date.

NEW YORK — The New York Times Guild, a unit of The NewsGuild of New York, announced on Tuesday that it has reached a tentative agreement with The New York Times Company on a new collective bargaining contract after more than two years of negotiations. The tentative agreement, which must be ratified by members to go into effect, is a five-year deal that will be effective until March 2026.

Nationwide—In a webinar today, Gannett newsroom workers, policy experts, and union leaders with the NewsGuild-CWA urged shareholders to withhold their vote on Gannett Company, Inc. Board Chairman and CEO Mike Reed at the company’s annual meeting on June 5. The NewsGuild-CWA represents more than 50 Gannett bargaining units, covering more than 1,000 employees. 

NEW YORK – More than 250 media workers at Insider Inc. began a one-day strike this morning at 9 a.m. ET to protest the company’s proposal to lay off 60 Guild-represented journalists, eliminating 20 percent of the bargaining unit and significantly reducing the size of the award-winning newsroom. 

Insider management proposed the sweeping cuts last Thursday, April 20th, as part of a plan to reduce staff while still bargaining for a first contract with Insider Union. Insider Union members are represented by The NewsGuild of New York.

“Our unit was shocked and infuriated when management told us they wanted to lay off 60 of our coworkers even though there’s no urgent financial need for these cuts,” said Emma LeGault, Insider Union Unit Chair. “The company seemingly wants to protect its own profits, but it is us, the workers, who are being asked to pay the price.”

“I’m proud of the work I do for Insider,” said April Joyner, an Insider Union shop steward and Insider Correspondent who is on management’s proposed list for layoff. “Hearing that the company wanted to eliminate my position with no financial urgency was really insulting. I’m proud to walk out with my colleagues and stand united in our fight.”

In April 2021, more than 300 employees at ​​Insider announced they had formed a union of workers across editorial, including reporters, editors, producers and designers. Insider Union was officially certified by the National Labor Relations Board  the following June after the workers voted 241-14 in favor of unionization. The workers are still fighting for their first contract. 

“Insider management is attempting to undermine the bargaining process by proposing staffing cuts while refusing to agree to fair and reasonable layoff language, wage increases, and newsroom protections for the journalists who are central to the company’s success,” said Susan DeCarava, President of The NewsGuild of New York. “Insider Union members are demanding that the company bargain in good faith and rescind the effort to push their colleagues out of the newsroom. We are demanding a fair contract that will make Insider the best it can be for everyone.”

NATIONAL — This morning, NBC News Guild, a union representing just under 300 workers across NBC News, MSNBC, and TODAY Digital, sent a letter to management announcing that a supermajority of workers in the unit are committed to walking out on Thursday, February 9, unless the company walks back their unlawful actions. 

NATIONAL — Yesterday, NBC News management abruptly and illegally laid off several union journalists without providing us any advance notice or rationale. HR representatives promptly ended a call when stewards demanded an explanation for the terminations. 

Decisions like this undermine the essential work of NBC News and MSNBC employees and show a lack of care for the integrity and sustainability of our newsrooms.
