From Digiday |  Unions have raised wages, improved benefits and enhanced protection for staffers; raised morale and improved communication among workers who sometimes felt siloed and isolated from one another; created clear lines of demarcation around who can do what kind of work; and formalized new standards around transparency and equality.


From In These Times | It’s Monday morning and your alarm goes off. As you wake up, the dread of going to work creeps in. You’re feeling exhausted, stressed out, underpaid and underappreciated. It's a mindset you can’t shake, and no amount of coffee will fix: You have workplace burnout.


The nomination and election to fill the positions of President, Secretary-Treasurer, Local Chairperson, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Third Vice President,  and sixteen Executive Committee members of the NewsGuild of New York, Local 31003, The NewsGuild CWA, AFL-CIO CLC (the “Local” or “Guild”) shall be conducted in accordance with the Bylaws of the NewsGuild of New York, the Constitution of the NewsGuild, the CWA Constitution,  Federal Law, and these rules adopted by the Local Election Committee on August 8, 2019.


The incredible efforts of our membership across the nation were on full display this past week at the Communication Workers of America’s (CWA) 77th Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.


Over five months after announcing their union drive, the editorial employees of BuzzFeed News officially secured NewsGuild representation after a card-check was conducted at BuzzFeed News headquarters this afternoon. A third party verified that a majority of staffers elected to be represented by the NewsGuild of New York after more than 90% of eligible staff signed to the effort.


The Bernhardt Prize is an award of $500 given to an article that furthers the understanding of the history of working people. Articles focused on historical events AND articles about current issues (work, housing, organizing, health, education) that include historical context are both welcome.  The work should be published — in print or online — between August 1, 2018, and August 25, 2019. The deadline for the 2018-2019 contest is August 25, 2019.

At a nomination meeting for Wirecutter — which will be held via Zoom on July 23, 2019 — Guild members who have signed a membership card and are in good standing will be nominated to fill several vacant positions.


Eight delegates—nominated by the Guild’s Executive Committee—and four selected guests from the NewsGuild of New York will be heading to the 77th CWA Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada from July 29-31.
