Media professionals are well aware of the benefits social media promotion can bring, mainly, the driving of traffic to stories and building a stronger community among readers. Though when it comes to Instagram, the goals can seem a bit unclear, as this platform has not been traditionally designed to send readers to your stories or news site. But driving traffic is not the only perk to using social media. With visually-focused social media interfaces like Instagram, the point is to build brand awareness.

Hundreds of media workers were laid off last week. If this were to happen ten years ago, our industry would have been left dumbfounded. I’ve heard several journalists and media professionals both within and outside of our union comment that they’re just waiting their turn. Our members — and editorial workers across the country — are in a constant state of panic. Sure, this isn’t news, but it’s important for us all to not let this become the new normal in our industry. Layoffs are inevitable. But, you deserve protection and to leave a company on your terms.

Hi! Alice Newcome-Beill here, CUNY Brooklyn College alumnus after a brief stint at community college in Pennsylvania. When I’m not organizing labor movements or otherwise rousing the rabble, I consider myself an amateur cyclist and connoisseur of the digital realm. If I wasn’t in my current field I would likely be cooking or in some type of craft-based industry. I’ve always found working with my hands on projects with tangible results to be incredibly rewarding, if brutal — which is how I found myself among my fellow titans of journalism and working together for positive change.
