Statement from The New Yorker, Ars and Pithcfork Guild Units on WIRED Union

04/22/2020

The members of The New Yorker Union, Ars Technica Union, and Pitchfork Union are pleased to welcome the editorial staff of WIRED to the NewsGuild family, which includes such esteemed publications as The New York Times, Reuters, New York Magazine, BuzzFeed News, and many more.

WIRED workers organized for the same reasons our members did: for greater job security, for better wages, for increased transparency, for the elimination of a two-tiered employment system leaving many employees without a salary or benefits, and protections against corporate management with its own competing priorities that creates a perpetual feeling of unease.

The coronavirus pandemic has upended our already volatile industry, just when readers need WIRED's critical journalism the most. Readers have come to rely on WIRED's essential reporting to keep themselves and their families safe and informed during an unprecedented global health crisis. And we have to protect the workers who make such journalism possible.

We stand with our courageous colleagues who have united to take charge of their own future by forming a union, and we call on Condé Nast to immediately recognize the WIRED Union and begin the process of developing their first collective bargaining agreement.

Signed,

The members of The New Yorker Union, Ars Technica Union, and Pitchfork Union
