Challenger Susan DeCarava has been elected president of The NewsGuild of New York, defeating incumbent Grant Glickson (984 to 677), according to votes tallied Friday at the American Arbitration Association office in lower Manhattan.

The CWA Joe Beirne Foundation will award 16 partial college scholarships of $4,000 each for two years for the 2020-2021 academic year. CWA members, their spouses, children, and grandchildren are eligible for the scholarships, including the dependents of retired, laid-off, or deceased member.

Editorial employees of NBC News Digital announced today that an overwhelming majority of its staff have joined the NewsGuild of New York, TNG-CWA Local 31003, the union that represents nearly 3,500 media professionals in the Greater New York City area. The NewsGuild of New York is part of the larger 24,000-member NewsGuild-CWA, which represents news professionals across the U.S. and Canada.

From The New York Times | Employees of NBC’s digital news division announced on Wednesday that they intend to form a union representing about 150 workers, saying it would allow them to fight for better job protections as well as publicly criticize NBC News executives without fear of retaliation.

The layoff at Sports Illustrated yesterday was one of the most chaotic purges of talented journalists I’ve seen in two decades of my activism with the NewsGuild of New York. The handling of this situation was a complete failure of management — from Meredith to Authentic Brands Group to TheMaven (the various owners of the publication, respectively, over the past two years). As many of you probably saw on Twitter and beyond, the day was a rollercoaster for those journalists at SI.

Today we were anticipating a mass layoff at Sports Illustrated. Instead, minutes before scheduled “transition meetings” were set to begin, Meredith management cancelled and hosted an impromptu all-hands gathering, where SI staffers were given no information about their futures.

Last night at 9:11 p.m., New York Media management informed our members with no prior notice that the company has merged with Vox Media. Our members deserved far greater respect, especially as we are currently actively bargaining for a first contract. While we support any endeavor that protects the future of these publications, our job is to hold management to their word that this merger will only strengthen these publications and the careers of our members.
