We're Hiring a Local Representative

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, with a membership as diverse as our city, seeks an experienced, New York City-based Local Representative with bargaining and mobilizing skills, ready to represent members working in a rapidly changing media industry. Applicants should be ready to hit the ground running to lead contract campaigns and bargaining tables, to advocate for, communicate with, and organize news industry employees in America’s media capital.

A Local Representative is a bargainer, trainer, advocate, and organizer. In addition to mobilizing members and negotiating contracts, the job involves addressing grievances through collective solutions and settlements where possible, and preparing for arbitration when not. Member engagement and communications, and building a strong union presence in the workplace through robust steward trainings, are equally important aspects of the role. Local Representatives are also expected to assist members build leadership structures and mobilize around negotiations.

Most of our contracts are with news organizations. Our diverse membership includes print, digital, video and photo journalists; well-known correspondents; an array of newsroom and editorial staffers in print, digital and television; immigrant newsstand workers, and media business employees. We are building our union into a bigger, more powerful advocate for media workers.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years experience with contract bargaining, campaigns, and grievance handling;
  • Ability to write clearly and authoritatively for media professionals;
  • Familiarity with basic labor law;
  • Experience with building strong internal leadership structures and member networks;
  • Understanding of rapidly shifting media landscape, including social media and new media tech

Besides union experience, the job requires good judgment, people skills and writing ability. You should be able to work collaboratively with a highly-motivated staff, as well as be a self-starter, motivated to accomplish tasks and manage your own time. There is a steep learning-curve with our membership; knowledge of the news business and journalism is a valuable plus.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The Local Representative (i.e., business agent) will join our professional staff. Our office is currently all remote but when it is safe to return to offices, employees are expected to work out of our Times Square office. Salary range is 93k - 106k, commensurate with experience.
