Organize With Us

Democracy depends on journalism, and there’s no better time for media organizations to unionize.

Hilary Russ

Journalist, Reuters

“One of the NewsGuild’s biggest strengths is that they understand the journalism business so well. We all want to do the best journalism we can. And it’s important to know that it’s not just about a contract… the Guild wants to make sure that their journalists are doing the best work that they can. And that’s important to me because I care about the quality of the work that I do.”

Kia Johnson

Producer, Reuters

"Guild membership is important to push back on management policies that affect our members’ financial well-being, health care, and work-life balance."

A.O. Scott

Critic, New York Times

"...The value of our work is always in danger of being undermined or taken for granted, and the only way we can protect it is together."

Ken Belson

NFL Writer, New York Times

"Unity is critical in a business where the bosses are trying to slash costs, take away benefits and gut morale with continuous layoffs and buyouts."

Alex Press

Assistant Editor, Jacobin

"The Guild’s a structure connected to my work, but not aligned with the interests of my employer, which means I know they have my back. Unions are just the word we use to describe the power that comes from workers acting collectively, and that power is multiplied way beyond what my small shop could achieve because we’re connected to all the other publications represented by the Guild. And that’s a hell of a lot better than trying to navigate this industry on my own!"

Sindhu Sundar

Features Reporter, Law360

"At a time of cutbacks and layoffs in corporate-controlled media organizations, journalists need reliable support infrastructure to protect functional working conditions and to give them a feasible way to seek recourse if needed."

Sarah Leonard

Senior Editor, The Nation

"Union protections allow us to speak our minds at work, whether or not we think our boss will agree. That makes for a far better and more interesting newsroom."

It's election season at The NewsGuild of New York. From now until November, the Guild will be conducting a Local-wide as well as Unit specific elections. From the President of the Local to your Unit Chair, here is the information and rules you should know.

The layoff at Sports Illustrated yesterday was one of the most chaotic purges of talented journalists I’ve seen in two decades of my activism with the NewsGuild of New York. The handling of this situation was a complete failure of management — from Meredith to Authentic Brands Group to TheMaven (the various owners of the publication, respectively, over the past two years). As many of you probably saw on Twitter and beyond, the day was a rollercoaster for those journalists at SI.

Today we were anticipating a mass layoff at Sports Illustrated. Instead, minutes before scheduled “transition meetings” were set to begin, Meredith management cancelled and hosted an impromptu all-hands gathering, where SI staffers were given no information about their futures.

If you ever watched “Breaking Bad,” you probably remember the fictional fast-food chicken chain Los Pollos Hermanos, which served both as both a front for Gus Fring’s illegal activity and Metro Albuquerque’s top source of delicious curly fries. Taste the family! With a new spinoff movie now out on Netflix, someone had the bright idea...

The Islamic State on TikTok. Child sex abuse on Facebook. The trolling of Meghan Markle. What do these stories — published by The Wall Street Journal, The Times of London, and Sky News — have in common, besides a certain grim 2019-ness? They all used data from social media agency Storyful’s nascent investigative unit, which officially launched...

When California’s largest utility company cut power for thousands to avoid wildfires a couple of weeks ago, the San Francisco Chronicle turned to A/B testing — and a little tool called LaterPay. The Hearst-owned Chronicle, like most other metro newspapers these days, is increasingly oriented toward digital subscriptions, of which it has about 80,000. So...
