Law360 employees celebrate on Aug. 24 after overwhelmingly voting for Guild representation in a National Labor Relations Board election.

LOCAL BULLETIN - A 92 percent majority of the editorial staff of legal news website Law360 voted for Guild representation in a government-run election on Wednesday, despite an intense three-week management anti-union campaign. The staff of more than 130 reporters, editors, and news assistants and apprentices across the United States voted 109 to nine in favor of Guild representation in an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board.

The editorial staff of legal news website Law360 on Tuesday petitioned for union representation with The NewsGuild of New York with the goal of improving management and editorial practices and ensuring that employees share in the company’s continued growth.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Kathy Wilmore, whose relentless drive to galvanize Guild members at Scholastic Inc. helped usher in a quick, hassle-free contract this year after a contentious battle three years ago, has won the New York Guild’s 2016 Keenan Service Award. The award will be presented at a meeting open to all Guild members on Wednesday, June 29 at 6:30 p.m.

Following today’s announcement that New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office reached a settlement with Law360 under which the legal news website will stop requiring its journalists to sign non-compete agreements, NewsGuild of New York President Peter Szekely issued a statement calling for legislation to explicitly bar the use of such agreements for print and digital journalists.

LOCAL BULLETIN - The Guild is pleased to announce the opening of nominations for its annual service award, named in honor of the late Tom Keenan. Each year, the Keenan Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of a Guild member. Nominations, which can be made by any member, are open until Friday, May 27 at 6 p.m. EDT.

LOCAL BULLETIN - Full scholarship applications for union members and their families pursuing degrees at Empire State College of the State University of New York are now being accepted for the 2016-2017 academic year. Students who receive the scholarship will study online through Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning.
