In three years, our union's membership has grown 28%, we’ve won 27 contracts and we’ve proven that we are ready to do whatever it takes to fight for our jobs.

 

These accomplishments have come in no small part because of our current 1.75% dues rate.

 

This is why we, the elected membership of the NYGuild’s Executive Committee, are asking that you vote yes on an upcoming referendum to maintain our current dues rate, 1.75%, on a permanent basis.

 

A “yes” vote will keep our revenue stable and show management our union will stay in fighting shape for years to come. 

Life-saving news needs a stimulus

News-gathering operations are essential for a well-functioning society, especially in times of crisis. However, many newsrooms have been reduced to skeletal staffs and some have disappeared altogether. The NewsGuild Executive Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for federal, state, provincial, and local governments to provide public funds to sustain news operations. Public stimulus funds are quite possibly the only way to ensure long-term viability for these vital news-gathering operations. Learn more here.

The Daily Beast Union learned this morning in a throwaway line at the end of an email that new management had replaced EIC Tracy Connor. Tracy has contributed years of valuable service to our newsroom, mentored countless young journalists, and organized an untold number of office Secret Santas. Throughout the chaos of these recent, abrupt changes in leadership, she has supported, defended, and shielded the newsroom. The Daily Beast would not be what it is without Tracy’s inimitable talents and years of expertise, and we will miss her dearly. In addition, we are disappointed by the disrespectful treatment that she has received over the past few weeks — and this includes the nature of her dismissal.

On Wednesday, Vox Media informed New York Magazine employees that our company had entered into a partnership with OpenAI. This was the first time that the employees of New York Magazine, and the members of the New York Magazine Union, even heard that such an arrangement was under consideration.

The unionized members of The Atlantic Editorial and Business and Technology units are deeply troubled by the opaque agreement The Atlantic has made with OpenAI, and especially by management’s complete lack of transparency about what the agreement entails and how it will affect our work. Atlantic staffers have largely learned of this agreement from outside sources, and both the company and OpenAI have refused to answer questions about the terms of the deal. Instead, they’ve directed staffers to the very same outside reporting. 

NEW YORK – NewsGuild of New York-represented staff at Condé Nast brands such as Vanity Fair, GQ, Vogue, Glamour, Bon Appétit and more on Tuesday overwhelmingly ratified a three-year contract with the publisher.

October 10, 2023 — Members of the Reviewed Union, which represents workers at Gannett’s flagship consumer review site, will walk off the job on Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days event today in protest of management’s failure to schedule bargaining dates and revocation of overtime pay from hourly employees after the announcement of the union last year. The Reviewed Union is one of more than 50 Gannett bargaining units represented by The NewsGuild-CWA.

NEW YORK – In response to Gannett’s second quarter earnings call this morning, where the company announced that digital subscription revenue had returned to growth over the past three months, Gannett union members and NewsGuild leadership released the following statements. The NewsGuild-CWA represents more than 50 Gannett bargaining units, covering more than 1,000 employees.
