NewsGuild of New York Statement on Chaos at Sports Illustrated

Today we were anticipating a mass layoff at Sports Illustrated. Instead, minutes before scheduled “transition meetings” were set to begin, Meredith management cancelled and hosted an impromptu all-hands gathering, where SI staffers were given no information about their futures. It’s clear that TheMaven views this brand as merely a financial transaction. Meredith’s employees deserve better. We call on Meredith and ABG executives to reverse course and drop their agreement with TheMaven, which is clearly unfit to run this magazine. Meredith and ABG can save the future of Sports Illustrated. Save this storied magazine from massive cuts, and preserve this award-winning, beloved publication.
