Mobilization Director

The NewsGuild of New York seeks an experienced, self-motivated candidate to fill the position of Mobilizing Director to build a robust, powerful community of Guild activists and to support the ongoing transformation and growth of our union. This includes directing and overseeing contract campaigns and internal organizing, as well as identifying and developing member-leaders. Under the direction of the NYGuild president and in coordination with our organizing director, this role works closely with staff and unit officers to develop and implement contract campaigns, mobilizing plans, and training programs.   

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003 is a labor union representing nearly 3,000 news and media professionals in the Greater NYC area. The NewsGuild-Communication Workers of America represents over 22,000 news media workers in the US and Canada. Our members work in all areas of the media industry, including print, digital and broadcast operations.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify, assess and develop member leaders, activists, and strong internal committees

  • Direct, develop and execute contract campaigns plans with clear goals, strategies, creative escalating tactics and benchmarks, in coordination with local staff, unit officers and bargaining committees

  • Direct, develop and implement Local-wide training and education programs

  • Lead local-wide internal organizing campaigns and build member engagement around those campaigns.  

  • Work collaboratively with staff and leadership to support ongoing growth and member engagement

Qualifications:

  • +4 years labor mobilizing and organizing experience required; additional experience working in media a strong plus

  • Demonstrated experience running strong, successful contract campaigns

  • A strong commitment to building a diverse, democratic and member-led union and labor movement

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities; must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills

  • Ability to assess members, have them make concrete commitments and take action; facilitate committee meetings, etc.

  • Ability to work irregular hours, including evening meetings, and occasional weekends

  • Ability to perform administrative tasks necessary for mobilizing quickly and efficiently (producing materials, maintaining databases, correspondence, etc.)

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently, multitask, be well-organized and reliable

Salary and benefits:
