We're Hiring a Local Representative

09/08/2021

The NewsGuild of New York, CWA Local 31003, with a membership as diverse as our city, seeks an experienced, New York City-based Local Representative with organizing and bargaining skills, ready to represent members working in a rapidly changing media industry. Applicants should be ready to hit the ground running to lead contract campaigns and bargaining tables, to advocate for, communicate with, and organize media workers in America’s media capital.

A Local Representative is a bargainer, trainer, advocate, and organizer. In addition to mobilizing members and negotiating contracts, the job involves addressing grievances through collective solutions and settlements where possible, and preparing for arbitration when not. Member engagement and communications, and building a strong union presence in the workplace through robust steward training, are equally important aspects of the role. Local Representatives are also expected to assist members in building leadership structures and organizing around negotiations.

Most of our contracts are with news organizations. Our diverse membership includes print, digital, video and photo journalists; well-known correspondents; an array of newsroom and editorial staffers in print, digital and television; tech workers, immigrant newsstand workers, and media business employees. We are building our union into a bigger, more powerful force for raising standards across this industry for media workers everywhere.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years experience with contract bargaining and organizing, especially first contracts, campaigns, and grievance handling;
  • Experience with building strong internal leadership structures and member networks;
  • Ability to write clearly and authoritatively for media workers;
  • Familiarity with basic labor law;
  • Understanding of rapidly shifting media landscape, including social media and new media tech

Besides union experience, the job requires good judgment, people skills and writing ability. You should be able to work collaboratively with a highly-motivated staff, as well as be a self-starter, motivated to accomplish tasks and manage your own time. Knowledge of the news business and journalism is a valuable plus.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The Local Representative will join our professional staff. Our staff is currently all remote but when it is safe, will return to being based out of our Times Square office. Salary range is 93k - 106k, commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including full health care and pension plans. Equal Opportunity Employer. Union-represented position.

The NewsGuild of New York is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace. Diversity in the workplace is to be valued and true collective strength for our members can only be achieved by including everyone. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume, contact info, three references, a contract campaign writing sample and any other helpful documents to president@nyguild.org
