Unfolding Events at Capitol Hill; Stay Safe and In Touch

01/06/2021

Dear Guild Colleagues,

Many of you are currently working to keep all of us informed as the events on Capitol Hill continue to unfold. Your safety is vital, and your fellow Guild members and staff are thinking of you. We're here if you need any support. Remember, you have a right to decline any ask that puts your safety at risk.

Unit and Local leaders are monitoring the situation on the Capitol. We’re reaching out to members who are reporting and working from DC, and we’re in touch with employers to ensure that you and your colleagues are safe. As of now, we can report that many Guild members who were at the Capitol have evacuated or found safety.

The demand for rapid and accurate journalism is deeply and widely felt by all of us, especially in moments of terror and danger. Your dedication, especially those currently reporting from the Capitol, is necessary and courageous.

The nation needs you. As a Guild — as a community — we stand together during these difficult times and follow our calling: to tell the important stories that will shape history. In doing so, we affirm our commitment to democracy.

We will continue to follow this situation closely and report back any necessary updates. In the meantime, please stay safe and stay in touch.

In solidarity,

Susan DeCarava,
President, The NewsGuild of New York
