The NewsGuild of New York is Hiring a Local Representative 

The NewsGuild of New York—CWA Local 31003, with a membership as diverse as our city, seeks experienced, New York City-based Local Representatives with organizing, bargaining, and strike experience who is ready to work alongside and coach media workers as we collectively build power in a rapidly changing industry. 

The NewsGuild of New York is a fighting, member-led union. Our Local Representatives are expected to be strong bargainers, trainers, advocates, and organizers who assist our member-led bargaining tables, contract campaigns and stewards networks. In addition to mobilizing members and negotiating contracts, the job involves addressing grievances through collective solutions and settlements where possible, and preparing for arbitration when not. Member engagement and communications, and building a strong union presence in the workplace through robust steward training, are equally important aspects of the role. Local Representatives are also expected to assist members in building leadership structures and organizing around negotiations. 

The NewsGuild of New York believes strongly in a team-approach to organizing and bargaining, Local Representatives are expected to have well developed interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. This job is highly collaborative and Local Representatives are expected to exhibit strong leadership when working with and supporting others. 

Most of our contracts are with news organizations. Our diverse membership includes print, digital, video and photo journalists; well-known correspondents; an array of newsroom and editorial staffers in print, digital and television; tech workers, immigrant newsstand workers, and media business employees. We are building our union into a bigger, more powerful force for raising standards across this industry for media workers everywhere.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • 3-5 years experience with contract bargaining and organizing, especially first contracts, campaigns, grievance handling, and strikes;
  • Experience with building strong internal leadership structures and member networks;
  • Ability to write clearly and authoritatively for media workers;
  • Familiarity with basic labor law;
  • Understanding of rapidly shifting media landscape, including social media and new media tech;
  • Experience successfully building to and executing a strike.

Besides union experience, the job requires good judgment, people skills and writing ability. You should be able to work collaboratively with a highly-motivated staff, as well as be a self-starter, motivated to accomplish tasks and manage your own time. Knowledge of the news business and journalism is a valuable plus.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The Local Representative will join our professional staff. Our staff is all remote but there is space available in our Times Square office for anyone who voluntarily wishes to use it. Salary range is 93k - 106k, commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including full health care and pension plans. Equal Opportunity Employer. Union-represented position.
