Stewards Training One: Defending Our Rights

NewsGuild stewards are the backbone of our union, defending their coworkers when they are needed most. In this workshop we will review how stewards can use their special rights and protections to effectively advocate for their coworkers in investigatory interviews. We will also discuss how to handle supervisors who are trying to put you off or trip you up.

Please fill out the information below and then select one of the upcoming training dates to attend. The number of attendees in each training is limited to ensure active participation in the workshop. New dates will be added as classes fill up. If you sign up for a date, but then cannot attend, then please email danielle@nyguild.org.

Effective Meeting Facilitation

Running effective meetings is a key part of building a strong union! But do your union meetings drag on too long? Does it feel like the same people are always talking? Is not enough getting done? Are the meetings just plain boring? Well, you are not alone!

In this workshop we will discuss how to run effective meetings. Learn how to create a strong agenda, stay on task, get real work done, and make the experience enjoyable in the process!

Labor Law 101 

Every union member should know the basics of labor law and how to use it. This training provides activists with an introduction to labor law—the rights provided to workers, how those rights are enforced, and how to spot some of the ways that employers will bend and break the law to try and undermine our collective power.

This workshop is facilitated by Gay Semel, retired attorney who previously worked at Region 2 of the NLRB and was District Counsel for District 1 of CWA for more than 30 years.

Grievance Handling: Best and Worst Practices
 
Review best practices for handling grievances and how to avoid common pitfalls, mistakes and traps in our latest online workshop for Guild stewards. Experienced Teamster business agent and labor educator Richard DeVries will use a true-to-life scenario to explore the highs and lows of grievance handling as a shop steward or business agent.

This is a 90 minute workshop.

Tackling Racist & Sexist Pay Practices in the Workplace
 
Pay Studies conducted by NewsGuild members have exposed shocking pay disparities impacting women and people of color at employers across the country.
