Words Matter: Sense and Sensibility in Reporting
Join us for a broad-ranging panel discussion on how journalists can balance objectivity and neutrality with accurate, fair, and trustworthy coverage.
Moderated by Forward Together's Janna Zinzi, this dynamic panel features:
-
Adeel Hassan, writer and editor for Race/Related, a newsletter and reporting project at The New York Times.
-
Gideon Resnick, a political journalist at The Daily Beast whose work has been published in VICE, the New York Observer, and the Atlantic, among others.
-
Veronica Bayetti Flores, writer on race, immigration, gender, and music, is the co-creator and co-host of Latinx music podcast Radio Menea. She is a co-founder and Managing Partner at the Center for Advancing Innovative Policy.
-
Bryce Covert, independent journalist writing about the economy and contributing writer at The Nation.
There is an ongoing dialogue within journalism about diversity of coverage, including where we go for “expert” commentary and sourcing, that has become particularly acute in the age of #DACA, #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter. What responsibility do we as reporters and journalists have in engaging the communities most affected by the issues on which we report?
Our co-sponsor for this panel, Forward Together, developed a Latinx Reproductive Justice media guide which we’ll use as a springboard to explore how more nuanced considerations in reporting can both enrich coverage and increase diversity on the page, regardless of the area or beat.
We invite NewsGuild journalists who cover a range of topics to join us, as the conversation will touch upon how such considerations might apply to all areas of reporting and editing.
