Management Wants to Freeze Wages, Trash Seniority, and Hike Health costs by 20 % for Guild Members Only

In an audacious move, management began contract talks yesterday, demanding to gut our contract with proposals that would leave us little more than our hats for handouts. Among their demands, management wants to freeze minimum pay and to have non-union employees perform our work whenever they wish. That would give management the right to replace any and all of our jobs with non-Guild workers.

The Struggle for a Fair Contract at Amsterdam News

If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, want crops without plowing the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and never will. -Frederick Douglass

Negotiations Update

Ms. Tatum was once again in attendance at the most recent bargaining session, held April 30. The Guild asked how she could think that a devoted staff entrenched in the ideals of The Amsterdam News could possibly accept what the company had proposed. After some hesitation, Tatum replied that she appreciated the Committee's candor, and though she wants to reward a devoted staff, it was not the best time to do it.
