GUILD TO HAVE GENERAL MEETING TO DISCUSS CONTRACT EXTENSION

AOL Purchase To Be A Major Issue In Talks

On November 30, there will be a General Membership meeting of the Newspaper Guild at Time, Inc. to discuss talks with the company about extending the 1998-2001 Contract.   The Guild's Unit Council at Time, Inc. has talked over the possibility of having an extension rather than a full-blown negotiation, and it has unanimously endorsed the idea.

The issues to be discussed in an extension would be very limited:

  1. Economic issues, including raises and minimums.
  2. Guild Contract security, in light of the impending purchase of Time Warner by AOL.  It is obviously essential that AOL recognize and honor the Guild's Contract with Time Inc.
  3. Discussion concerning the compliance manual and freelance guidelines.

The meeting will take place at 1:00pm in the third floor "Stadium" conference room in the Sports Illustrated Building, next door to the Time-Life Building at 135 West 50th Street.   New York Guild President Barry Lipton, Unit Chairperson John Shostrom and the whole Unit Council encourage all members to attend.
