Get Involved!

Become a Guild Shop Steward

At Scholastic

The following is in response to inquiries from members about how they can become involved in Guild efforts to improve our working lives at Scholastic. Becoming a Shop Steward is one of the most effective ways to help everyone, including management, to understand the special concerns we have in our workplace.

—Shop Steward Job Description—

A Communicator: You will help represent fellow members in discussions with the Union Officers, our Union Representative, and with Management, representing member(s) feelings, wishes, and grievances.

A Problem Solver: Not every problem is a grievance. You will help prevent most problems from becoming grievances by taking appropriate actions: getting the facts, involving the Union Officers, helping to form a plan of action, and following up.

An Educator: You will be responsible for orienting new members to the worksite and the union.

One of your chief responsibilities will be to help build a united, organized, and involved membership.

If you have any questions, or are ready to become more involved, please contact any of your Guild officers:
