Welcome to OurTimeInc.org
Who makes Time Inc. work? The Newspaper Guild has
created OurTimeInc.org for you, the employees—the people who work at
Time Inc. and who make it work! Here’s where you can read about
what’s going on with layoffs and contract negotiations, what it all
means to you, what you can do—and share what you have to say about
it all.
Time Inc. is pushing for draconian changes in
your rights and benefits under its contract with the Guild—for
full-time employees the transition to a 40-hour workweek alone
will amount to a 14% to 21% pay cut—and has announced that it is
slashing almost 300 jobs, an all-time record at the company. You’d
think we’re on the verge of bankruptcy, right? Wrong! The New
York Times reports an 18% profit margin at Time Inc.!
The good news is that the Guild succeeded in
getting an extension of the old contract through March 22 while the
new one is being negotiated. That means the benefits, financial
agreements, and other rights that we’ve fought for over many
years—and which also indirectly improve working conditions for the
employees outside of Guild jurisdiction elsewhere at Time Inc.—are
still in place during these layoffs. But make no mistake, the
company’s proposed takebacks—unfair, unwarranted, even outrageous as
they are—remain on the table and represent a serious threat.
To help you, as well as for you to help us, in
this struggle to preserve decades of hard-won gains and protect
employee rights, on this site you’ll find …
-
The Guild’s newsletters: up-to-date,
accurate news on the new-contract negotiations, plus information
on the layoffs that spells out your rights under the current
union-negotiated contract—information you need to decide how
best to handle the layoffs, whether you are a target of them or
desire to take a package. (You can also click on On Time
Bulletins in the bar on the left.)
-
A place to voice your views on the layoffs
and negotiations, and ideas and actions to help let the world
know about the company's outrageous acts: click on the
"comments" link read other employees’ views and the latest news.
Add your own thoughts and useful news and links, all
under the protection of the Guild. (Click on Your Comments.)
You can help! Numbers count. Let’s show
the company that we are strong: Join the discussions on the Comments
page; come to the contract negotiation meetings; help encourage your
co-employees to join the Guild, and of course, join the Guild if you
are not already a member (see link below). We are an “open shop,”
which means if you are in Guild jurisdiction, you are protected by
the union even if you are not a member. But you should know that the
Guild’s ability to protect people is dependent on how many people
join as members—and the 1.4% cost of union dues is much cheaper than
a 21% pay cut or the loss of your job.
