Candidates for Guild’s top offices

to speak at New York Guild forum

There’s an election coming up that’s important to all Guild members and it’s not the one that’s been getting space on the front pages of most newspapers. All three top leadership posts of The Newspaper Guild (TNG) sector of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) are up for grabs. Every Guild member will get to vote. And the candidates are coming to New York next week to try to convince you to vote for them..

You owe it to yourself and to your union to meet, hear and question the candidates about their plans for the future of TNG-CWA, the sector of CWA locals that includes the New York Guild. Here are the particulars:

WHO: Candidates seeking top offices of TNG-CWA: Linda Foley and Bernie Lunzer (for president), Carol Rothman and Scott Stephens and (for secretary-treasurer) and Lois Kirkup and Connie Knox (for international chairperson)

WHAT: Forum in which TNG-CWA candidates will speak and take questions.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 6 p.m. EST

WHERE: New York Guild meeting room, 1501 Broadway, Suite 708 (between 43rd and 44th Streets). Light refreshments will be served.

Linda Foley, TNG-CWA president since 1995, is seeking re-election with two running mates: TNG-CWA Executive Council member Scott Stephens of the Northeast Ohio local who is running for secretary-treasurer and TNG-CWA Executive Council member Lois Kirkup of the Ottawa local who is running for international chairperson. Their slate is called Team Guild.

Bernie Lunzer, TNG-CWA secretary-treasurer since 1995, is running for president with two running mates: International Chairperson Carol Rothman of the Philadelphia local who is running for secretary-treasurer, and TNG-CWA Executive Board member Connie Knox of the Washington-Baltimore Local, who is running for international chairperson. Their slate is called Stronger Guild.

The New York Guild has no position on the election. Nominations will be made at the TNG-CWA Sector Conference in Providence in late February. Ballots will be mailed to Guild members a few weeks later.
