The N.Y. Guild’s Administrative Committee has selected Standard & Poor’s Unit Chairperson Ed Fannon as the winner of the Newspaper Guild of New York Tom Keenan Service Award for 2005. Fannon is the ninth person to win the award since it was created.
Fannon, who has served as a Guild unit officer and as a member of the Local Executive Committee for several years, was nominated by several fellow members of the S&P unit who, in their nominations, wrote glowingly of his dedication to serving the needs of the members of his shop. The Keenan Award was established by the Local Executive Committee to recognize individuals who have, during the past year, “performed above and beyond the call of duty in service to the New York Local, and best exemplify the ideals of a true labor leader in the spirit of Tom Keenan.” The prize is named for Keenan, a former Chairperson of the New York Times Guild unit, who passed away in 2000. He had served in that capacity longer than anyone else.
“Ed has been a great asset to his unit,” said New York Guild President Barry Lipton. “This past year, he served his members with great distinction in helping to lead difficult negotiations, securing buyouts that averted involuntary layoffs.”
“This year, the Local Administrative Committee found it easy to select the winner of the award,” said New York Guild Secretary-Treasurer Bill O’Meara. “The Committee was unanimous in deciding that Ed really deserved the honor.”
Fannon will be presented with his award at a Guild General Membership meeting to be scheduled in the near future. Reports on the recently concluded Guild Sector Conference and the upcoming CWA Convention will also be made at the meeting. We hope you’ll attend.
