Deadlines are fast approaching for two scholarship opportunities offered through the Communications Workers of America, the parent union of the Newspaper Guild.
The Joe Beirne Foundation's Board of Directors will award 30 partial college scholarships of up to $3,000 each for the 2005-2006 school year, and last year's winners also will receive second-year scholarships for the same amount, contingent upon satisfactory academic achievement.
Eligible for the scholarships are CWA members (including all members of the Guild) and their spouses, children and grandchildren, including the dependents of retired, laid-off or deceased members. Applicants must be high school graduates or high school students who will graduate during the year in which they apply. Undergraduate and graduate students returning to school may also apply.

They will be accepted between November 2004 and March 31,
2005. The winners will be chosen by lottery drawing. Further information about

This valuable scholarship program - named for CWA's founding president - is made possible by the funding of CWA locals.
The David S. Barr Award, offered by The Newspaper Guild-CWA,
is intended to recognize one high school and one college student for their
journalistic achievement and to encourage young journalists to focus on issues
of social justice. It is named after David S. Barr, who for a quarter of a
century served as The Newspaper Guild's general counsel, mentor, role model
and institutional memory.
The high school winner receives a $500 award, with $1,500 going to the college student winner.
All entries must represent work published or broadcast
between Jan. 1, 2004 and Dec. 31, 2004 that helped to right a wrong, corrected
an injustice, or promoted justice and fairness.
The awards competition is open to all high school students,
including those enrolled in vocational, technical or special education
programs; and to all part-time or full-time college students, including those
in community colleges and in graduate programs.
Judging will be concluded in Washington, D.C., by a four-member panel, including a journalist, an academic, a labor lawyer and a member of the Barr Family.
